Anna Sugak has established herself as one of Ukraine's premier basketball talents, recently earning the title of best center in the Ukrainian Superliga for the 2023/2024 season. The accomplished player reflected on her basketball journey in a recent interview, sharing insights into her career achievements and future aspirations.
"Becoming the best center in the Ukrainian Superliga for the 2023/2024 season isn't just an award for me, but confirmation that hard work, passion for basketball, and belief in yourself brings results," Sugak explained.
Sugak's basketball journey began unexpectedly when a coach approached her during a physical education class. Previously engaged in dancing, she found herself drawn to basketball and never looked back. Her professional career has been marked by significant achievements, including a Ukrainian Championship with "Interkhim" in 2016, a Ukrainian Cup in 2018, and consecutive silver medals in the Superliga in 2024 and 2025.
With the national team, Sugak has represented Ukraine on numerous international stages, including the Youth Olympic Games 3x3 in 2018, the World Championship 3x3 in 2022, and the World Summer Universiade 5x5 in 2019.
Interestingly, Sugak has experience in both traditional 5x5 basketball and the more dynamic 3x3 format. She appreciates the distinct qualities of each style.
"I really like 3x3 basketball for its dynamics and fast-paced play. There's no time for long plays, so you need quick reactions where every second counts. The main thing in basketball is team chemistry," she shared.
During her time with "Kyiv-Basket", a club she describes as having "a great history and ambitions," Sugak achieved significant personal recognition. Beyond her best center award, she was also named MVP of the week during championship play.
When asked about her strengths on the court, Sugak pointed to her tenacity in the paint. "My main advantages on the court are fighting under the basket, reliable defense, and readiness to do the 'dirty work.' I always fight for every rebound, whether in offense or defense, and I'm not afraid of tough battles under the basket."
Sugak named LeBron James as her favorite basketball player, admiring his powerful game, leadership qualities, and basketball IQ. She also follows WNBA players Paige Bueckers and Hailey Van Lith, both of whom she competed against during the Youth Olympic Games.
Off the court, the Ukrainian center was recognized for more than just her basketball skills when she was voted "Miss Basketball Spring-2020" by the Ukrainian Basketball Federation.
Looking ahead, Sugak is focused on preparation for the next season and is open to opportunities abroad, having previously played in Italy with Marigliano in Naples. She maintains the dream shared by many athletes of competing in the Olympic Games, having already experienced the youth version of the event.
Could we see Sugak representing Ukraine at the Los Angeles Olympics? With her determination and proven track record, it certainly seems within reach for one of Ukrainian basketball's brightest stars.
