Benjamin Bonzi enters the U.S. Open with a surprising psychological edge over former champion Daniil Medvedev. The French player already holds a 2-0 head-to-head advantage against the Russian, including a notable four-set victory at Wimbledon earlier this summer.

"The momentum is clearly with Bonzi right now," tennis analysts suggest as the Day 1 matchups approach at Flushing Meadows.

Bonzi's recent form has been impressive - he reached the Cincinnati fourth round by defeating Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Musetti, and Stefanos Tsitsipas in succession. Meanwhile, Medvedev appears to be struggling significantly, having gone without an ATP title since Rome 2023 and posting a mediocre 8-8 record in his last 16 matches.

Among other interesting Day 1 matchups, American Ethan Quinn faces Swiss player Jerome Kym in what should be a straightforward contest for the higher-ranked Quinn. At just 21 years old, Quinn has already notched 11 ATP-level wins in 2025 and has the home-court advantage.

On the women's side, Veronika Kudermetova and Belinda Bencic enter as strong favorites against Janice Tjen and Shuai Zhang respectively. Kudermetova, fresh off a Cincinnati semifinal appearance and a Wimbledon doubles title last month, brings exceptional form into the tournament.

Interestingly, Bencic, an Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo 2021, reached the Wimbledon semifinals just last month - making her match against Zhang another potential straight-sets victory for the higher-ranked player.

The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season promises exciting tennis right from Day 1. Can Bonzi complete his hat-trick against Medvedev, or will the Russian finally figure out how to counter the Frenchman's game?
