Ian Begley has shared insights on the New York Knicks' plans to finalize their roster through free agency. The SNY insider discussed the team's continued pursuit of available talents as they look to round out their bench with one more veteran signing.
"I would not rule out the idea that the Knicks want to bring in another veteran in addition to a Shamet, and the only way to do that is to make a trade," Begley explained on "The Putback."
Landry Shamet appears to be the frontrunner for the team's final veteran's minimum contract, but the "Knicks" haven't closed the door on adding Ben Simmons as well. The defensive-minded, pass-first forward has been taking his time evaluating his options while several teams, including the Knicks, remain in the mix.
Interestingly, any move to sign both players would require the Knicks to create additional roster space. Begley noted that the only pathway would involve trading a player with a guaranteed contract to open up another spot.
"We've reported about Ben Simmons, there's still interest there, but in order to bring in a Simmons or anybody else...you would have to trade somebody who has a guaranteed, standard NBA deal to open something up," he added.
The situation creates a development dilemma for the organization. NBA analyst Keith Smith raised a key question about the team's direction: should they focus on developing younger talent like Pacôme Dadiet or prioritize adding experienced players to a roster clearly built to contend now?
The Knicks have been notably active this offseason, securing their core pieces including extending Mikal Bridges after a somewhat uneven regular season. Their veteran-heavy rotation leaves little room for developing prospects.
Will the Knicks ultimately choose veteran experience over youth development? The next few days might reveal just how all-in this New York team is on immediate contention.
