Jay Gorter is leaving the Netherlands for a surprising career move to Cyprus. The Ajax goalkeeper has reached an agreement with Paphos FC, as reported by insider Fabrizio Romano.

"The opportunity in Cyprus offers Gorter a chance to restart his career after limited playing time in Amsterdam," – a source close to the negotiations commented.

While the transfer fee remains undisclosed, "Ajax" will retain a percentage of any future sale of the 25-year-old Dutch shot-stopper. Not a bad piece of business for the Amsterdam club.

Gorter's time at "Ajax" hasn't been particularly impressive since joining in summer 2021. He appeared in just 14 matches, managing only two clean sheets while conceding 25 goals. Those numbers hardly inspire confidence, do they?

Interestingly, Paphos FC could soon cross paths with Ukrainian football. The Cypriot club is a potential opponent for "Dynamo Kyiv" in the Champions League third qualifying round. If the Kyiv team advances past Hamrun, they'll face the winner of the Paphos – Maccabi Tel Aviv matchup. Should "Dynamo" falter against the Maltese side, they'll meet the loser of that pairing in Europa League qualification instead.

Can Gorter revitalize his career on the Mediterranean island? Only time will tell.
