Jonathan Kuminga appears increasingly likely to remain with the Golden State Warriors on a short-term deal as his restricted free agency situation drags on without resolution. The former seventh overall pick has been the subject of trade speculation, with the "Sacramento Kings" emerging as potential suitors, but talks have cooled considerably in recent days.
The Warriors reportedly rejected Sacramento's package of Dario Saric, Devin Carter, and two second-round picks—a clear indication Golden State values Kuminga significantly higher than what's currently being offered.
"If you're Keegan Murray and his representation and you see how this roster is shaping up, are you sure that you want to be there?" Sam Vecenie of The Athletic questioned on a recent episode of the Game Theory Podcast. "Obviously he'll be a restricted free agent next summer and they can match whatever they want, but are you excited about not shooting?"
Interestingly, this raises questions about Keegan Murray's own future with the "Kings" as he approaches restricted free agency next summer. The 24-year-old forward already saw his field goal attempts drop from 12.7 to 10.8 last season, including nearly one fewer three-point attempt per game.
The situation becomes more complicated when examining Sacramento's roster construction. With score-first players like DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Malik Monk (who averaged a career-high 14.4 field goal attempts last season), Murray could find himself further marginalized in the offense. Even playmakers like Domantas Sabonis and newly-acquired Dennis Schroder will command their share of shots.
Sources suggest Murray might actually be Golden State's dream target rather than Kuminga, given his potential fit alongside Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. Murray's shooting ability would complement the Warriors' system perfectly.
The Warriors' best hope for acquiring Murray might actually require the player himself to express uncertainty about signing long-term with Sacramento. Until then, the most likely outcome appears to be Kuminga returning to Golden State for the upcoming season.
Could Murray's camp eventually force Sacramento's hand? That's a situation worth monitoring as the new NBA season approaches.
