Club Career

Sevilla

Javi Varas joined Sevilla FC at 23, initially playing with their B team for three seasons. His contributions were pivotal during the 2006–07 season, aiding them in their historic promotion to Segunda División. Varas made his La Liga debut for Sevilla's main squad on 17 January 2009 in a 1–0 win against CD Numancia. Notably, he became the first-choice goalkeeper during the 2010–11 season, helping the club secure a UEFA Europa League spot by finishing fifth.

One of his career-defining performances came on 22 October 2011 against FC Barcelona when he was awarded Player of the Match for saving eight shots, including a penalty from Lionel Messi, ensuring a 0–0 draw.

Over time, Varas' role diminished with the arrival of Beto in 2013. Despite this, he was part of the squad that won the UEFA Europa League in the 2013–14 season, although he did not play in the final.

Valladolid

Varas signed with Real Valladolid on 25 August 2014 for a single season. His presence was crucial, as he missed only four league matches, although the team narrowly missed promotion via play-offs.

Later Career

On 12 July 2015, Varas joined UD Las Palmas, significantly contributing to their retention in La Liga over two seasons. After this, he returned to the Segunda División, signing with Granada CF in 2017. In late stages of his career, he played for SD Huesca, joining them on 19 February 2019. Subsequently, he retired from professional football in October 2019 at the age of 37.
