Goianiense: About
Atlético Clube Goianiense was founded on April 2, 1937, by Nicanor Gordo and Joaquim Veiga, making it the oldest football club in Goiânia, the capital city of Goiás state in Brazil. Throughout its history spanning over eight decades, the club has demonstrated resilience by experiencing several promotions and relegations between Brazil's football divisions, repeatedly returning to top-flight football despite setbacks.
The club holds the distinction of being the first team from Goiás state to win a national competition (Série C). They made a notable return to Brazil's top-flight Série A in 2010 after a 23-year absence and won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B in 2016. Their best international performance came in 2022 when they reached the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana. Domestically, they have won the Campeonato Goiano (state championship) 18 times, including a perfect undefeated campaign in 1957. Most recently, they won the 2024 Campeonato Goiano despite being relegated from Série A in the same season.
Known by the nickname 'Dragão' (The Dragon), which is reflected in both the team's emblem and mascot, Atlético Goianiense plays its home matches at Antônio Accioly Stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 12,500 spectators. The club's traditional colors are red and black horizontal striped shirts, white shorts, and striped socks, creating a distinctive visual identity in Brazilian football.
Currently, Atlético Goianiense competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B following their relegation from Série A after finishing 19th in the 2024 season. The club is led by President Adson Batista and Head Coach Claudio Tencati. Despite the setback of relegation, the club demonstrated its continued competitive ability by winning the 2024 Campeonato Goiano state competition. Atlético Goianiense continues to represent an important part of football tradition in the state of Goiás and maintains a significant presence in Brazilian football with aspirations to return to the top flight.
