David de Gea is in talks to make a surprising return to Manchester United after spending just one season away from his former club. The 34-year-old Spanish goalkeeper, currently at Fiorentina, could soon find himself back between the posts at Old Trafford.

"The opportunity to return to Manchester presents an interesting chapter in my career," a source close to the player revealed.

United's management has reportedly initiated negotiations with de Gea, whose current contract includes a clause allowing him to transfer for a reasonable fee. The Spanish shot-stopper is no stranger to Manchester, having spent 12 years with the club from 2011 to 2023, racking up an impressive 545 appearances and keeping 190 clean sheets.

Interestingly, it was de Gea's performance against his former employers that may have rekindled their interest. The keeper put on a solid display in a recent friendly match on August 9, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Despite Fiorentina extending his contract until 2028, the pull of returning to his former stomping ground might prove too strong to resist. The Italian club secured his services just last year, but may now face losing their number one much sooner than anticipated.

Could this unexpected reunion be exactly what both de Gea and United need right now? Only time will tell if the Spanish keeper will once again call Old Trafford home.
