Marta Kostyuk had to abandon her quarterfinal match at the prestigious Montreal tournament due to a wrist injury, ending her Canadian campaign in heartbreaking fashion. The Ukrainian tennis player was facing Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina when pain forced her to retire after losing the first set 1:6.

The 23-year-old Ukrainian requested a medical timeout early in the second set as wrist problems became unbearable. Despite medical staff's efforts, they couldn't provide quick relief, leaving Kostyuk with no choice but to withdraw from the match.

"I couldn't continue playing with this pain," Kostyuk reportedly explained through tears as she left the court.

The official scoreline was recorded as 1:6, 1:1, marking another disappointing result for Ukraine's second-ranked player. Worth noting, this setback follows a difficult stretch where Kostyuk had already lost six consecutive matches before arriving in Montreal.

Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina, Ukraine's top tennis star, has advanced to the quarterfinals after an impressive victory over American Amanda Anisimova, the world number nine and 2025 Wimbledon finalist. Svitolina dominated that match with surprising ease.

Interestingly, before this victory, Svitolina had also defeated Russian Anna Kalinskaya in the round of 16, showing excellent form at this $5.1 million prize money event.

Svitolina now faces experienced Japanese player Naomi Osaka in her quarterfinal match. Can she continue her impressive run while her compatriot Kostyuk focuses on recovery?
