Marta Kostyuk exited the doubles competition at the WTA 500 grass tournament in Berlin after a decisive first-round defeat. The Ukrainian tennis player and her partner Eva Lys, who represents Germany but was born in Kyiv, struggled against the top-seeded Italian duo.
The match ended with a straightforward 2:6, 2:6 loss to Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, who continue their impressive run on the tour. This was the first time Kostyuk and Lys had teamed up together in doubles.
By the way, Errani and Paolini are currently riding high on a 12-match winning streak. The Italian pair captured the Roland Garros 2025 title in early June and had previously claimed victory at the Rome 1000 tournament before their French Open triumph.
Both Kostyuk and Lys had already experienced disappointment in the singles draw a day earlier. Marta fell to Emma Navarro, while Eva couldn't overcome Paula Badosa in her opening match.
The victorious Italians will continue their Berlin campaign against Americans Ashlyn Krueger and Jessica Pegula in the next round. Can they extend their winning streak even further on grass? Their current form suggests they'll be tough to beat.
