Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa has failed to secure a move to Spanish second-division side "Burgos" after negotiations between the parties broke down yesterday. The 40-year-old Mexican goalkeeper, currently a free agent after leaving Portugal's AVS, was seeking a new club to maintain his chances of representing Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.

"Finding playing time this season is absolutely crucial for my World Cup ambitions," Ochoa reportedly told those close to him during the negotiation process.

Instead of signing the experienced Mexican, "Burgos" opted to bring in Jesús Ruiz, a 28-year-old goalkeeper who previously played for "Racing de Ferrol". Interestingly, Ruiz will now compete for the starting position with Ander Cantero, the very goalkeeper he replaced at his former club.

The Spanish transfer window closed last night, leaving Ochoa in a difficult position. The veteran keeper must now look elsewhere if he hopes to impress Javier Aguirre, Mexico's national team coach who has made it clear he prefers selecting players actively competing at club level.

By the way, Ochoa has already been left out of Mexico's upcoming September friendlies – a concerning sign for a player hoping to make his sixth World Cup appearance in 2026.

"Burgos" reportedly considered three different goalkeepers before ultimately deciding on Ruiz, who brings significant experience with 100 appearances in Spain's Segunda División.

Where will Ochoa land next? With many European transfer windows now closed, his options appear increasingly limited in the quest to revive his international career.
