Elina Svitolina reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros 2025 before falling to defending champion Iga Swiatek in a competitive match. The 30-year-old Ukrainian, currently ranked 13th in the WTA standings, made her 14th appearance at the prestigious Paris tournament where she has now compiled 26 career wins.
Svitolina battled hard against the Polish star but ultimately lost 1:6, 5:7, matching her previous best results at the French Open where she had reached the quarterfinals in 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2023.
"Roland Garros is like the Champions League of tennis," tennis experts noted when discussing the tournament's significance on the global stage.
Ukraine was represented by six female players at the Paris clay courts. While Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk, Dayana Yastremska, and Angelina Kalinina qualified directly through their world rankings, 21-year-old Anastasia Soboleva made a surprising debut by advancing through the qualification rounds.
The tournament proved financially rewarding for the Ukrainian contingent. Svitolina earned €440,000 for her quarterfinal run, while Yastremska and Starodubtseva each collected €168,000. Kalinina took home €117,000, with Kostyuk and Soboleva earning €78,000 each. Interestingly, Soboleva had only earned €41,924 in her entire career before this tournament. Daria Snigur also earned €29,500.
Roland Garros organizers increased the total prize fund to €56.35 million this year, up from €53.48 million in 2024. Last year's singles champions, American Coco Gauff and Italian Jannik Sinner, each received €2.5 million.
By the way, this year's men's final between Sinner and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz set a tournament record, lasting 5 hours and 31 minutes – the longest final in Roland Garros history.
Following Paris, the Ukrainian players continued their European tour at Wimbledon, where Svitolina, Kostyuk, Yastremska, Kalinina, and Starodubtseva all competed in the main draw. The London tournament featured a record prize pool of £53.5 million, 7% higher than in 2024.
At Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek dominated American Amanda Anisimova in the women's final with a devastating 6:0, 6:0 scoreline. In the men's competition, world number one Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz 4:6, 6:4, 6:4, 6:4.
The Ukrainian players will next head to New York for the US Open beginning August 25. Can they improve on their Roland Garros results? Tennis fans will be watching closely.
