Stephen Curry remains in an awkward position as the Golden State Warriors have made zero signings nearly three weeks into free agency, with reports suggesting the team is hoarding draft picks for a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade.
"I'm saying one of the reasons they're not trading future first-round picks, other than the one they traded for Butler, it's like what if Giannis becomes available," – explained Tim Kawakami on the Warriors Plus Minus Podcast.
The 37-year-old Curry, arguably the greatest player in franchise history, watches as his championship window narrows while the front office appears reluctant to make immediate improvements. Meanwhile, the organization continues working out Jonathan Kuminga's future, reportedly seeking a young player and a first-round pick in return.
This pipe dream of landing Giannis Antetokounmpo has become a source of frustration for Warriors fans. Why? Because there's simply no guarantee the 2x MVP will ever become available for trade. The Milwaukee Bucks recently made a drastic move by waiving Damian Lillard to sign Myles Turner – a decision that might actually convince Antetokounmpo to remain with the franchise.
Even if the Greek star were to request a trade, the Warriors would face stiff competition. Several younger teams with deeper asset pools could easily outbid them, with Golden State's only advantage potentially being if Antetokounmpo specifically requested a move to the Bay Area.
The immediate concern is obvious. By staying patient for a fantasy scenario, the Warriors might be rejecting trades that could help their veteran trio of Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green compete right now.
Interestingly, the Warriors' strategy represents a massive gamble with the twilight years of their core. If they somehow pull off the Antetokounmpo blockbuster, they'll be vindicated. But what happens if this dream never materializes? Are they wasting precious time while Curry still has elite basketball left in him?
