Elina Svitolina has purchased an apartment in Kyiv despite the ongoing war in Ukraine and concerns from her husband, French tennis player Gael Monfils. The Ukrainian tennis star explained that her decision was well-thought-out as she plans to spend more time in her homeland in the future.
"I always think several steps ahead. I've wanted to find a cozy place in Ukraine for a long time. When I entered this apartment, I immediately understood – this is it," Svitolina shared in an interview.
The athlete admitted that Gael Monfils worries each time she visits Ukraine. "Of course, Gael gets nervous. It's not surprising, since the news mostly shown in France about Ukraine is very pessimistic," she noted.
Despite these concerns, the tennis player emphasizes that it's in Ukraine where she feels inner strength and motivation. According to her, the housing in Kyiv became a convenient choice: the residential complex has a gym, shelter, and everything necessary for comfortable living.
Currently, Svitolina is settling into her new apartment. Interestingly, what she enjoys most is the panoramic view of the city from the kitchen – the athlete says it inspires her and gives energy for the whole day.
Worth mentioning that Svitolina has recently returned to the WTA top-20 ranking, currently holding the 13th position. Her best achievement at Roland Garros has been reaching the quarterfinals in 2015, 2017, 2020, 2023, and most recently in June 2025. Will this new base in her home country help fuel further success on the court?
