Khabib Nurmagomedov has issued a clear warning about Jack Della Maddalena's threat level as Islam Makhachev seeks a new challenge in the welterweight division. After vacating his 155-pound championship, Makhachev is eyeing a move up to face the Australian champion who recently claimed the welterweight crown.
"I believe Jack Della Maddalena is the toughest opponent in Islam's career. That's my opinion. Not Oliveira or anyone else. None of those other fighters," Nurmagomedov stated during an interview on the Hustle Show podcast.
Khabib specifically pointed to the significant size advantage Della Maddalena would have over other potential opponents like Ilia Topuria. The former lightweight king didn't mince words when comparing the two fighters.
"He's twice the size of Ilia. Taller, bigger. Stronger legs, bigger body... His boxing is just as good. And he moves very well in wrestling. If I were preparing Islam to fight either Ilia or JDM, I'd be more worried about JDM. Much more," added the respected mentor.
Interestingly, Della Maddalena has already proven his takedown defense against high-level competition, having neutralized Belal Muhammad's wrestling to capture the title. This particular skill could pose serious problems for Makhachev's grappling-heavy approach.
According to circulating reports, this championship clash may already be in the works. Both fighters are reportedly being lined up by the UFC for a November showdown at Madison Square Garden in New York – the promotion's annual marquee event at the historic venue.
Can Makhachev overcome the size disadvantage that has Khabib so concerned? Or will Della Maddalena's physical advantages prove too much for the former lightweight champion's first welterweight title attempt?
