Prince Owusu has established himself as CF Montréal's lifeline with his remarkable scoring efficiency in Major League Soccer. The 28-year-old German striker netted his 11th goal for the Canadian club last weekend against New England Revolution in a 3-1 result, cementing his position as the second-best German goalscorer in MLS history with 20 total career goals.
"I always knew about my qualities, and it was always my goal to stand out," Owusu told Transfermarkt. "That makes it even nicer that I have a run now."
The forward's impact on his struggling team cannot be overstated. No player in the entire league has contributed a higher percentage of their team's goals this season than Owusu's impressive 47.8%. Without his contributions, Montréal would have just 12 goals to their name. Talk about carrying a team on your shoulders!
Prince Owusu arrived in MLS in summer 2023, initially joining Toronto FC from Jahn Regensburg before making the move to provincial rivals Montréal. The transition has proven fruitful - he's already scored 14 goals in 29 appearances for Montréal, surpassing his entire Toronto output of 12 goals in 45 matches.
"I needed a bit of time to adjust to the climate and the league in general," the 1.9m tall striker explained. "I also think that in Montréal, I have found a team that trusts me, whether it is the coaching staff or the entire club really. The boys in my team make me feel special. That's the most important part."
Interestingly, Owusu has even had the unusual experience of receiving an accidental assist from Lionel Messi during a recent match against Inter Miami. Not that he's particularly starstruck.
"Even nicer would be an assist by Cristiano Ronaldo," Owusu remarked. "He is the only player in the world that would get me really excited if that happened. Otherwise, every opponent is the same for me, even if those matches are great experiences."
The German's market value has quadrupled since joining MLS, rising from €550,000 to €2 million. Despite his personal success, CF Montréal finds itself at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just 18 points from 25 games, making playoff qualification nearly impossible.
Owusu also commented on the reported arrival of German star Thomas Müller to Vancouver Whitecaps: "Without a doubt, Thomas Müller is a big name in Canada. The young players in our dressing room are chatting quite a bit about it. It is always something special when stars join MLS. It just highlights the level the league has reached."
Despite rumored interest from European clubs, particularly in Germany, Owusu remains focused on his current team. "My agent, Cliff Asare, deals with those topics," he said, noting his contract runs until 2026 with a club option for an additional season.
Can the German striker's remarkable efficiency in front of goal eventually help turn Montréal's fortunes around? Time will tell, but Owusu remains optimistic about the club's future despite current struggles.
