Wessam Abou Ali has completed his move to Major League Soccer side "Columbus Crew" from Egyptian powerhouse "Al Ahly" in a deal worth up to $9.5 million. The Palestinian striker joins the American club after a remarkable stint in Egypt where he established himself as a clinical finisher.
"Wessam is a special player whose journey speaks to his resilience, character, and tireless work ethic, which are qualities we value at our Club," – stated Columbus Crew general manager Issa Tell about the new acquisition.
The transfer involves an initial payment of $7.5 million with an additional $2 million if Abou Ali reaches 15 goals for his new employers. The contract runs until 2027 with an option for an additional year. Not a small sum, right? This initial fee alone makes him the third most expensive signing in the Crew's history.
Born in Aalborg, Denmark, Abou Ali represents Palestine internationally and becomes just the third Palestinian to ever play in MLS. His journey to the top hasn't been straightforward – starting in Danish youth clubs before spells at Vendsyssel FF and Swedish side Sirius, eventually landing at Al Ahly in 2024.
During his time with the Egyptian giants, the 26-year-old netted an impressive 38 goals while providing ten assists across 60 appearances. Do you remember the FIFA Club World Cup match against Porto? That's where Abou Ali truly announced himself on the global stage with a stunning hat-trick in a 4-4 draw.
Interestingly, the forward brings something "Columbus Crew" has been seeking – set-piece expertise. According to Egypt data scout at Transfermarkt, Osama Rakha, "He is an advanced forward who usually plays in the spaces in opponents' back-line. For years, Al Ahly struggled with set pieces, but Abou Ali solved that with his excellent free kick abilities."
Abou Ali's stats in Egypt speak volumes – he claimed the Egyptian Premier League top scorer award within just six months of joining the club, bagging 18 goals and six assists in a mere 19 games.
The transfer didn't come without drama, though. Reports suggest "Al Ahly" fought hard to retain their star man, with the player eventually going on strike to force the move. Despite the controversial exit, the Egyptian club managed to secure a substantial fee, making Abou Ali their second most expensive departure ever.
Will the Palestinian striker continue his scoring form in MLS? Columbus fans certainly hope so.
