Sang-Bin Jeong has completed his move to "St. Louis CITY SC" from league rivals "Minnesota United" in a deal worth $1.6 million. The Korean forward joins the club as their third most expensive signing in history, with the agreement potentially rising to $2 million through performance-based incentives.
St. Louis CITY SC will maintain Jeong's U22 Initiative roster status along with his current contract running until 2025, with a club option for an additional year. By the way, "Minnesota United" hasn't walked away empty-handed – they'll receive a percentage of any future transfer fee if Jeong moves on.
"Sang-Bin is an exciting attacking player with great pace and creativity in the final third," – explained Lutz Pfannenstiel, St. Louis sporting director. "He brings versatility to our attack, the ability to stretch defenses with his runs in behind, and a high work rate that fits perfectly with our intense style of play."
The 22-year-old attacker arrived in MLS last year after "Minnesota" acquired him from Premier League side "Wolverhampton Wanderers" for €2.5 million. Interestingly, despite being on Wolves' books, Jeong never actually played for the English club, instead spending two seasons with "Grasshoppers" in Switzerland – where he failed to find the net in 15 appearances.
His MLS numbers don't exactly jump off the page either. Seven goals and five assists across 82 appearances for the Loons? Not exactly the return you'd expect from a multi-million dollar signing.
For injury-plagued "St. Louis CITY SC", this move represents a calculated gamble. They've secured a dynamic attacking option without committing long-term, with Jeong's contract providing flexibility beyond 2025. Will the change of scenery help unlock his potential? That's the million-dollar question.
