Dmytro Nagorny, head coach of "Cherkasski Mavpy", believes the bronze medals his team earned in the 2024/25 season represented their maximum potential given the circumstances they faced throughout the year.
"Considering our team's formation conditions, the average age of our players, and how pre-season preparation went – in my opinion, bronze medals were our maximum achievement," Nagorny explained. "Although, if not for Nazar Kholod's injury mid-championship, perhaps the result could have been better."
The coach identified the victorious series against BC "Rivne" for third place as the team's greatest achievement this season. However, he expressed regret about one unmet goal – defeating "Dnipro." Three times during the season, Nagorny's squad came within striking distance of this objective, but luck wasn't on their side.
When asked about player development, the coach noted significant improvement in on-court understanding among teammates, both defensively and offensively. He also pointed out that decision-making speed improved considerably compared to the beginning of the season.
Interestingly, when pressed to single out individual performances, Nagorny refused to play favorites. "Each player contributed equally within their capabilities to our successful season," he said, though he did acknowledge Andriy Agafonov for helping create and maintain proper team chemistry.
The off-season hasn't been entirely restful for Nagorny. "To be honest, I'm already missing basketball, especially the coaching routine," he admitted. Between enjoying warm weather and short bicycle rides, he finds mental relaxation at the bee farm he shares with his father.
Looking ahead to next season, Nagorny revealed that work on team formation is already underway. The frontcourt will be the primary focus for strengthening, as offensive rebounds by opponents proved to be their biggest problem last season. The team plans to reconvene in late August, with friendly matches forming a crucial part of pre-season preparations.
When discussing Ukrainian club basketball's current state, Nagorny didn't sugarcoat the situation. "It's obviously not very stable," he observed, noting how promising young talent often leaves Ukraine after finishing school, while financial support becomes increasingly difficult to secure as many sports patrons redirect their funds to support the armed forces.
Nagorny concluded with heartfelt appreciation for the fans who supported the team through a challenging season. "We play for you – we'll make every effort to show even better basketball next season!" Can the "Mavpy" improve on their bronze medal finish? We'll find out when the new season tips off.
